How It Works

Lasers are medical devices that have changed and dramatically advanced the way we treat skin issues. The definition of a laser can help you better understand why your laser procedure is so safe and effective. Lasers are unique light emitting devices which give off specific wavelengths of light – targeted to eliminate skin issues. The treatment is a quick office-based procedure and requires no anesthesia.   IPL is an abbreviation for “Intense Pulsed Light.”  Laser or IPL therapies destroy melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) without damaging the skin’s surface. The goal of a series of IPL treatments is to make your skin more evenly colored, by decreasing the irregular brownish and reddish areas that you have developed as a result of aging and sun damage, or in the case of tattoo removal break up ink in the skin. In addition, lasers or IPL therapy brightens the skin and gives it a more youthful glow.

After treatment, age spots or tattoos fade gradually over several weeks or months. Laser therapy has few side effects, but it may result in slight discoloration of the skin. Because these treatments are considered cosmetic, your insurance may not pay for them.

Treatments with a laser or IPL typically require several sessions. These treatments are usually completed in 15 to 30 minutes. The skin may be red for a few hours and feel like a mild sunburn, however, you can resume your normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Sun protection and avoidance of direct sunlight exposure is also necessary after laser or IPL therapy.
